40 Million in One Year: The TV5MONDE Formula
Decoding FAST Strategy Through Global Data & Exclusive Interview
French public broadcaster TV5MONDE has surpassed 40 million global viewers just over a year after launching its FAST (Free Ad-Supported Streaming Television) service — a speed of growth unthinkable in the linear TV era.
At the same time, research firm Omdia forecasts global FAST revenues will nearly double from $6 billion in 2025 to $11 billion by 2030. As cord-cutting accelerates and Connected TV (CTV) consumption surges, FAST has moved from a secondary distribution channel to a primary axis of the global media landscape.
Patrice Courtaban, EVP of Global Growth & Business Development at TV5MONDE and CEO of TV5MONDE USA, sat down with StreamTV Insider ahead of the StreamTV Europe conference in Lisbon this April to lay out the full picture of the network's FAST strategy.
"The growth of AVOD and FAST has helped us reach new viewers who are moving away from traditional Pay TV and spending more time with free content on connected TVs and digital devices," Courtaban said. Just over 12 months after launching, the network is already seeing strong momentum not only in the Americas and Europe, but also in newer markets like the MENA region, India, Australia, and across APAC.
The Plex Deal: Three Channels, Four Continents at Once
In February 2026, TV5MONDE signed a distribution agreement with Plex, launching three FAST channels simultaneously across Australia, New Zealand, Europe and Latin America.
Channel | Genre | Markets | Subtitles |
|---|---|---|---|
TV5MONDE Chefs | Food & culinary travel | Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK,Australia, New Zealand, Latin America (Argentina, Mexico) | English & Spanish(Portuguese & Arabic coming soon) |
TV5MONDE Voyage | Travel, fashion & lifestyle | Same as above | Same as above |
TV5MONDE Info | International news & current affairs | Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy,Spain, UK + U.S. (Sling Freestream) | English & Spanish |
On the channel development rationale, Courtaban explained: "When we started developing our FAST offering, we focused on content that really reflects the DNA of TV5MONDE, with themes that could resonate broadly and travel well across different markets and cultures. Lifestyle quickly stood out as a natural fit." TV5MONDE Voyage and TV5MONDE Chefs are now performing not only in core markets but also in the United States, Latin America and the Middle East.
The Biggest Surprise: 'News Crosses Borders Too'
The most closely watched revelation from the interview was the unexpected performance of TV5MONDE Info, the news channel. "We initially thought news would remain mostly local, with audiences prioritizing national sources," Courtaban said.
The reality was different. TV5MONDE Info is doing well in markets including the United States, Italy, India and Australia — markets with no natural Francophone affinity.
"We initially thought news would remain mostly local, with audiences prioritizing national sources. But the channel is doing well in markets like the United States, Italy, India, and Australia, which shows there is a real appetite for international perspectives."

TV5MONDE Info combines the network's own news programming with content from seven partner public broadcasters: TV5 Québec Canada, Radio-Canada, Télé-Québec, France Télévisions, RTS (Switzerland), RTBF (Belgium) and TV Monaco. Key programmes include 64 minutes, TV5MONDE Le Journal, L'Invité and Objectif Monde.
Why It Worked: Six Factors Behind 40 Million Users
TV5MONDE's FAST success is not accidental. Cross-referencing Courtaban's interview with Omdia market data reveals a structural formula — one that any non-English-language broadcaster with global ambitions can learn from. No single factor explains the result. Brand, content, distribution, language access and editorial philosophy all aligned simultaneously.
The first lever was 40 years of brand equity. Decades of continuous global distribution across 217 countries gave TV5MONDE negotiating power on platform deals and immediate audience trust. Courtaban was direct: "That brand equity has been a real asset as we've developed our FAST offering."
On content strategy, the lifestyle-first positioning proved decisive. Fashion, travel and food are genres that travel across cultural boundaries with minimal friction — local subtitles are enough. TV5MONDE moved early in a category that, as Courtaban noted, is still expanding across FAST lineups globally. First-mover advantage was captured before the window closed. Then came the reversal nobody anticipated: TV5MONDE Info's strong showing in the U.S., Italy, India and Australia dismantled the industry assumption that news is inherently local.
Distribution strategy combined hardware and platform partnerships in parallel — TCL (November 2025), Plex (February 2026) and Sling Freestream (April 2025) — rather than sequentially. Paired with a phased multilingual approach (English and Spanish first, Portuguese and Arabic next), geographic reach expanded rapidly. As Courtaban put it: a new subtitle language equals a new market.
Tying everything together is a curation philosophy. "With so much content available, curation really matters, and brands remain meaningful to many viewers" — a principle that governs channel programming, viewer retention and platform positioning alike.
# | Success Factor | Evidence & Facts | Channels | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 40-Year Brand Equity[Brand] | 40+ years of distribution across 217 countries.Courtaban: "That brand equity has been a real assetas we developed our FAST offering" | Chefs · Voyage · Info | ★★★★★ |
2 | Cultural Universalityof Lifestyle Content[Content] | Fashion, travel & food cross cultural barrierswith subtitles alone. First-mover advantagein an underpenetrated FAST genre | Chefs · Voyage | ★★★★★ |
3 | OEM + PlatformDual-Track Distribution[Distribution] | TCL (Nov 2025) · Plex (Feb 2026)· Sling Freestream (Apr 2025)."Distribution is key" — rapid global footprintthrough major OEM & platform partnerships | Chefs · Voyage · Info | ★★★★★ |
4 | Phased MultilingualSubtitle Strategy[Language] | English & Spanish first →Portuguese & Arabic coming next.Each subtitle language = a new market opened | Chefs · Voyage | ★★★★ |
5 | News ChannelBreaks the Local Barrier[Surprise] | TV5MONDE Info performing strongly inU.S., Italy, India & Australia."Real appetite for international perspectives"— news proven as a global FAST genre | Info | ★★★★ |
6 | Curation Philosophy[Strategy] | "With so much content available, curationreally matters, and brands remain meaningful."Re-engagement goal spans FAST, linear & VOD | All channels | ★★★ |
Remove any one of these six factors and the outcome changes materially. No brand equity means slower platform negotiations. Wrong genre choice means viewers don't return. Weak distribution means great content goes unseen. TV5MONDE has become the first documented case of a non-English public broadcaster proving this formula at global scale in the FAST era.

Omdia Data: The Global FAST Viewing Landscape
New research presented by Omdia at Content London 2025 in December quantified the regional gap in FAST adoption through a survey of 24,267 consumers aged 18–64. The U.S. ranked first globally with 65% of online adults watching FAST monthly, followed by Latin America (Mexico ~51%, Brazil ~43%). In Europe, Spain (35%) led ahead of the UK (26%), Germany (25%) and France (17%).

Omdia Global FAST Key Figures (December 2025, Content London)• Global FAST revenues: $6bn (2025) → $11bn (2030) (~83% growth)• European CTV advertising market: forecast to grow 3x by 2031• Programmatic advertising growth rate: +30% year-over-year• South Korea: forecast to become the world's 12th largest FAST market by 2030 ($23M → $48M, +109%)
Maria Rua Aguete, Head of Media & Entertainment at Omdia, stated: "There is a clear and growing appetite for free, linear content and Spain is leading Europe in this trend. FAST has become a compelling alternative for viewers who want high-quality entertainment without a subscription." She also noted the rise of YouTubers and digital creators launching FAST channels, but drew a clear line: "YouTube content on a TV screen does not automatically make it 'TV'. Distribution alone does not redefine the underlying medium."
Europe Catching Up Fast
Courtaban assessed the European FAST market as closing the gap with the U.S. rapidly. "Both consumption and ad monetization are growing across the board," he said. The European CTV advertising market is expected to grow threefold by 2031, with programmatic advertising currently expanding at around +30% year over year.
He acknowledged the structural difference: Europe remains more fragmented, with a wider mix of OEMs and CTV operating systems. But the underlying dynamics mirror the U.S. — a handful of major players dominate.
"FAST platforms are increasingly positioning themselves as an alternative to traditional linear TV operators, with stronger content lineups and more localized offerings. In some markets, they are even carrying broadcast channels within their lineups."

About TV5MONDE
Founded in 1984 under French government leadership, TV5MONDE is the world's leading French-language (Francophone) public broadcaster, reaching 437 million households across 217 countries and territories with 64 million weekly viewers. CEO Kim Younes leads the organisation, which operates a dedicated U.S. subsidiary (TV5MONDE USA) and runs TV5MONDEplus — the world's largest French-language streaming platform, offering thousands of hours of on-demand content with subtitles available in up to six languages.
In the U.S. alone, TV5MONDE operates seven services: TV5MONDE USA, TV5MONDE Cinema On Demand, TV5MONDE Style, TV5MONDE Docs, TV5MONDE Info, children's network TiVi5MONDE and the TV5MONDEplus streaming service.
South Korea: The Next FAST Frontier
The TV5MONDE story carries direct relevance for the Korean content industry. Omdia told the Busan International Streaming Festival in August 2025 that "Korean content has never been stronger — on FAST and subscription services — and Netflix has been the biggest amplifier of that story worldwide." Viewership popularity in SVOD is now driving growth of Korean FAST channels globally, Omdia said.
South Korea is set to become the 12th largest global FAST market by 2030, with revenues doubling from $23 million in 2024 to $48 million. Wavve currently leads the domestic FAST market, followed by Samsung TV Plus and LG Channels. The Korean government has pledged approximately ₩1 trillion (~$720 million) to support K-content's global FAST expansion.

The TV5MONDE blueprint maps directly onto K-content's strengths: global brand recognition, lifestyle genres with universal appeal (K-food, K-beauty, K-travel), a powerful multilingual fanbase concentrated in Spanish- and Arabic-speaking markets, and access to Samsung and LG's global smart TV distribution networks — the same OEM channel that proved decisive for TV5MONDE. The window is open. The question is whether Korean content owners will move before it closes.
"Our mission is to reach audiences wherever they are, across all platforms and distribution channels. The growth of AVOD and FAST has helped us reach new viewers who are moving away from traditional Pay TV."
