UNR Med Posts Best-Ever NIH Funding Ranking, Topping $20M in Research Awards

The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med) has reached a historic milestone in national medical research standings, securing its highest-ever position since tracking began in 2001.

In the 2025 rankings released by the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research (블루리지 의학연구소), UNR Med placed 93rd among 145 accredited medical schools nationwide — a benchmark that reflects the institution's accelerating investment in biomedical discovery.

The Blue Ridge rankings, widely regarded as an objective measure of institutional research strength, are calculated on the basis of competitive grant awards from the National Institutes of Health (NIH·국립보건원), the federal government's primary engine for biomedical funding. Because NIH grants require rigorous peer review, placement in these rankings signals demonstrated scientific capacity rather than institutional size alone.

At the departmental level, UNR Med posted particularly strong results.

The Department of Physiology and Cell Biology (생리세포생물학과) ranked 22nd out of 74 comparable programs nationally, securing $10,031,440 in NIH awards, while the Department of Pharmacology (약리학과) ranked 25th out of 79, with $10,236,683 in funding.

Combined, the two departments attracted more than $20.2 million — a figure that places UNR Med well within the upper tier of research-intensive programs in the Mountain West.

As Nevada's only public medical school, UNR Med carries an explicit public-health mandate: addressing care disparities across one of the nation's most underserved rural landscapes. Federal research investment reinforces that mission directly, expanding student research pipelines, enabling interdisciplinary collaboration, and driving clinical innovation tied to real-world community health challenges.

The institution characterized this recognition as both a milestone and a forward-looking benchmark, signaling an intent to continue climbing national research rankings in the years ahead.

More broadly, the University of Nevada, Reno has been consolidating its status as a top public research institution. The University has retained its Carnegie “R1: Very High Research Activity” designation through 2025, reflecting record levels of external grants and doctoral production across disciplines. In national rankings, UNR is listed among the country’s best public universities, placing in the top 200 National Universities and around the top 100 public institutions in the 2026 U.S. News & World Report tables. On campus, President Brian Sandoval has highlighted all‑time highs in Honors College enrollment, growth in faculty elected as American Association for the Advancement of Science fellows, and a series of new strategic plans and impact initiatives in science, liberal arts and other colleges — signs that the institution’s research, teaching and community‑engagement profile is rising in tandem with UNR Med’s advances.
