ARIRANG's 17 vinyl variants sell 208,000 in week one, the most by a group since 1991 — album drives 16% U.S. CD growth in H1; U.S. becomes top importer of Korean albums for the first time

BTS(방탄소년단)' fifth studio album ARIRANG sold 208,000 vinyl(LP, 바이닐) copies in its first U.S. week (March 20–26). That is the most by a group since Luminate(루미네이트) began electronically tracking sales in 1991, and sixth among all albums in the modern era, behind five by Taylor Swift. According to Billboard on March 29, the album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 dated April 4 with 641,000 equivalent album units. Vinyl made up about 40% of its 532,000 pure album sales.
ARIRANG is the group's first studio album since BE in 2020 and the first released with all seven members since 2022, after they completed military service. During the hiatus, Korean physical album sales fell 17.7% in 2024 to about 98.9 million, the first decline in nine years.
In the U.S., Stray Kids(스트레이 키즈) added seven Billboard 200 No. 1s over the same period. The March 21 comeback show at Gwanghwamun Square(광화문광장) in Seoul, streamed live by Netflix(넷플릭스), drew 18.4 million viewers worldwide, and the album passed 110 million Spotify(스포티파이) streams on its first day.
The physical sales structure was unchanged from before the hiatus. Top 10 Billboard 200 K-pop albums average 23.6 CD variants but only 2.6 LP variants; pop albums on the same chart average 9.5 and 9.6. Korean labels have released physical albums mainly on CD, which is easy to produce in Korea and Japan, and BTS' prior releases were multi-edition CD box sets.
The U.S. vinyl market grew for a 19th straight year in 2025, to $1.043 billion in revenue and 46.8 million units, with its top-selling albums coming from pop acts.
Before the release, HYBE America(하이브 아메리카) asked Luminate to analyze past U.S. vinyl trends. The work is documented in the case study Luminate published on September 1, "HYBE America and Luminate Partner to Support BTS' Historic Comeback Era."
The analysis found that the five best-selling variants typically account for 97.6% of an album's vinyl sales. On that basis, HYBE issued 17 vinyl variants including seven member editions. In its first week ARIRANG sold about 567,000 copies on CD and 208,000 on vinyl.
The CD sales lifted the U.S. CD market 16% in the first half of 2026; the vinyl sales set the first benchmark at this scale for a K-pop album in the U.S. vinyl market. In the same half, Korean album exports rose 125% to $257.5 million, and the U.S. overtook Japan as the largest importer for the first time.

Top 10 K-Pop Albums Average 23.6 CD, 2.6 LP Variants… BTS' Prior Releases Were CD Box Sets
Per the case study, K-pop acts average fewer than three vinyl variants per release versus about 10 for mainstream pop; the variant averages are based on Top 10 Billboard 200 albums through 2026. Per the report, physical variants defined by unique UPCs have become a standard tactic for securing a Top 10 Billboard 200 placement, and vinyl revenue for top K-pop albums had been growing but remained a minority.
Luminate judged that BTS, with its large global streaming footprint, would likely succeed in the Western market by offering more vinyl. Because prior releases centered on CD box sets, historical data on BTS' U.S. vinyl performance was sparse before this rollout.

Luminate's analysis of 2026 physical sales data found the five best-selling vinyl variants typically account for 97.6% of an album's vinyl sales. HYBE and Luminate ran customized data pulls to analyze changes in global music consumption, and on that basis HYBE introduced member-specific versions instead of a single standard release, investing in significantly more vinyl variants than prior BTS launches.
The report said diversifying the vinyl catalog for BTS' collector-driven fanbase targeted the high-indexing collectibles market and captured revenue that had previously gone unrealized. The final 17 variants included a dedicated edition for each of BTS' seven members (RM, Jin, SUGA, j-hope, Jimin, V, Jung Kook) and one group edition. The report described the structure as a dual incentive: fans bought the variant of their favorite member, and collectors bought the group edition to complete their sets.
Isaac Lee(아이작 리), CEO of HYBE America, said in the report that the two companies "decided to innovate a new type of working relationship" in which their teams explored new questions about fan behavior, and that they "examined vinyl trends and cross-examined it with other music consumption habits" to inform the physical-format approach.
Rob Jonas(롭 조나스), CEO of Luminate, said data on the collector fanbase's engagement "helped inform a new approach to vinyl, including member-specific editions," adding that the first-week results "show what's possible when a deep understanding of audience behavior translates into smart commercial strategy." The report noted that physical sales weigh heavily on Billboard 200 placement and that vinyl provides a revenue stream separate from digital streaming economics.
BTS U.S. Awareness at 42%, on Par With Rodrigo and Wallen… Median for 22 K-Pop Acts Is 9%
Luminate pointed to BTS' awareness beyond the K-pop category as the base for the vinyl results. Per Luminate's Artist + Genre Tracker (AGT), BTS' post-return U.S. awareness stands at 42%, on par with Olivia Rodrigo, Morgan Wallen and Travis Scott, and in the 78th percentile of more than 700 tracked artists. The median artist's awareness is 14%, which the report translated as BTS being better known than roughly four in five artists Luminate tracks.

Among the 22 K-pop acts tracked in AGT, median awareness is 9% and the mean is 11%; apart from one group at 25%, peers range from 5% to 15%. The report said HYBE used Luminate's consumer funnel insights to analyze BTS' likability and awareness, then treated BTS as a global pop act rather than a niche genre act.
Luminate said it saw the vinyl opportunity because BTS' market power mirrors mainstream pop icons, and pop acts use vinyl variants as collectibles for fans. The report framed the campaign as a new industry blueprint for physical monetization, blending K-pop collectibility structures with mainstream pop vinyl distribution. According to NPR on March 30, Stray Kids(스트레이 키즈) added seven Billboard 200 No. 1s during BTS' absence, and ARIRANG's 532,000 pure sales are the largest for a group since One Direction's Midnight Memories (547,000 in 2013).
Netflix Gwanghwamun Live Draws 18.4M Viewers… 110M Spotify Streams on Day One
Exposure at release underpinned the vinyl and CD sales. BTS THE COMEBACK LIVE | ARIRANG, streamed live by Netflix(넷플릭스) from Gwanghwamun Square(광화문광장) in Seoul on March 21, drew 18.4 million global viewers (Live+1), per Netflix's March 24 announcement. It reached the weekly Top 10 in 80 countries and ranked No. 1 in 24.
According to Music Business Worldwide on March 31, the Seoul city government counted 104,000 people at the venue, and the show was the first full seven-member performance since 2022. Netflix reported 2.62 billion social impressions across its own channels and released the documentary BTS: THE RETURN on March 27.

Per the same outlet, ARIRANG drew more than 110 million Spotify(스포티파이) streams in its first 24 hours, the most-streamed K-pop album in Spotify history and the biggest single-day album of 2026.
BIGHIT MUSIC(빅히트뮤직) reported first-day Korean sales of 3.98 million copies on Hanteo Chart, surpassing in one day the 3.37 million first-week record set by Map of the Soul: 7 in 2020.
U.S. H1 CD Sales 16.3M, Up 16%… ARIRANG Alone Sells 567,000 on CD
ARIRANG moved the totals for the entire U.S. physical market. In Luminate's 2026 Midyear Report, released July 15, U.S. CD sales rose 16% year over year to 16.3 million units. Vinyl grew 2.4% — the first time in more than a decade that CD growth outpaced vinyl. Physical sales across CD, vinyl and cassette totaled 38.2 million units, up 7.8%. Luminate attributed the CD growth to K-pop; per the report, ARIRANG alone sold about 567,000 CD copies. Excluding K-pop, U.S. CD growth was 6.7%.

According to Herald Business(헤럴드경제) on July 17, Luminate classified ARIRANG in the midyear report as a growth driver for both pop and K-pop. The same report found that 20% of U.S. music listeners are superfans, engaging with artists in five or more ways.
Among purchase-based superfans, 42% report household income above $100,000, versus 26% of all listeners. K-pop has 38% purchase-based fans, second to indie rock (40%), and 35% engagement-based fans, ahead of indie rock (30%).
U.S. Vinyl Revenue Tops $1 Billion… Swift's 1.334M Opening Week Sits at the Top
The U.S. vinyl market BTS entered runs at $1 billion a year. In the RIAA's 2025 year-end report released March 16, U.S. vinyl revenue rose 9.3% to $1.043 billion on 46.8 million units, up 7.9%. It was the first time vinyl passed $1 billion since 1983, and the 19th consecutive year of growth. CD revenue fell to $312.4 million on 29.5 million units. Total physical revenue rose 5% to $1.38 billion.

The top of that market is Taylor Swift. According to Music Week on March 16, Swift's The Life of a Showgirl sold about 1.6 million vinyl units in the U.S. in 2025, and its 1.334 million opening week is the largest for any album in the modern era. Per Billboard, Swift holds the top five vinyl weeks; BTS' 208,000 is sixth.
The global market points the same way. According to IFPI's Global Music Report 2026, released March 18, global recorded music revenue grew 6.4% to $31.7 billion in 2025; physical revenue rose 8.0% and vinyl 13.7%. Physical growth outpaced digital for only the second time on record. Japan, the world's largest physical market, returned to growth at 8.9%, and Asia accounted for 45.1% of global physical revenue.

Korean First Week of 4.16M… H1 K-Pop Album Sales Hit Record 49.53M
ARIRANG also lifted the Korean domestic totals. According to Issue & Insights(이슈인사이트) on August 2, the album's cumulative domestic sales in the first half were 4,224,016 copies, with first-week sales (초동) of 4.16 million. Per The Fact(더팩트) on July 15, Hanteo Chart(한터차트) counted 49.53 million K-pop album sales in the first half of 2026, surpassing the first half of 2023 (46.17 million), the only year to exceed 100 million annually.
Circle Chart(써클차트)'s May review reported monthly sales above 10 million for two consecutive months and about 45.4 million through May, up 9.4 million year over year, with a large share of that increase from ARIRANG alone.
The domestic market had declined for the two prior years. According to Circle Chart, physical album sales in 2024 fell 17.7% to about 98.9 million, the first decline in nine years. 2025 sales were about 93.5 million, with 18 albums passing one million copies, two fewer than the year before.

H1 Album Exports of $257.5M… U.S. Overtakes Japan as Top Importer at $74.1M
According to Korea Customs Service(관세청) trade statistics, album exports in the first half of 2026 rose 125.0% year over year to $257.5 million, a first-half record. Exports to the U.S. reached $74.1 million, overtaking Japan for the first time as the largest importer, with China second and Japan third. Per Newspim(뉴스핌) on June 2, first-quarter exports — a quarter packed with comebacks by BTS, BLACKPINK(블랙핑크) and others — rose 159% to $120 million, the first quarter above $100 million.
Full-year 2025 exports rose 3.4% to $301.7 million, passing $300 million for the first time, with Japan at $80.6 million, China $69.7 million and the U.S. $64.0 million. Six months of 2026 exports equaled 85% of the 2025 annual total.

K-Pop Averages Under 3 Vinyl Variants Per Release… Other Acts' U.S. Awareness at 5–15%
Korean labels' physical revenue comes from multi-variant CD structures. In the first half of 2026, when the U.S. became the largest importer of Korean albums, much of the U.S. CD growth came from K-pop while vinyl grew 2.4%.
In Luminate's count, top K-pop albums carry fewer than three vinyl variants per release, and the U.S. vinyl market runs at 46.8 million units and $1 billion a year. K-pop's share of the vinyl market is small relative to its share of CDs.
HYBE America described the ARIRANG campaign in the case study as a blend of K-pop collectibility structures with mainstream pop vinyl distribution. In the same report's AGT figures, K-pop acts other than BTS sit at 5% to 15% U.S. awareness.
The 17-variant member-edition structure was designed on a base of 42% awareness and a collector fanbase; those figures carry the condition that fanbase scale must be checked first before applying the same strategy to other acts. Luminate's 2025 year-end report counted seven K-pop albums among the top 10 U.S. CD sellers, showing that the CD-side base already exists.
