Chungnam Content Agency (충남콘텐츠진흥원) will stage the 2026 Korea Esports League (KEL, 대한민국 E스포츠 리그) Eternal Return Chungnam Asan Super Week at Asan Yi Sun-sin Gymnasium (아산 이순신체육관) on September 19 and 20. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (문화체육관광부) hosts the event; the Korea e-Sports Association (한국e스포츠협회, KeSPA), Nimble Neuron (님블뉴런) and Chungnam Content Agency co-manage it. Sixty-four players from 16 regionally franchised teams contest the Circuit 3 title. Admission is free, and the 500 main-floor seats sold out before the doors opened.

The season decider is in Asan rather than Seoul because KEL is built as a franchise league. The ministry allocated 800 million won (about $600,000) in its 2025 budget bill under the line item 'launch of the esports national league,' and clubs that establish a regional franchise receive partial support for player salaries and operating costs for up to four years.

With that support in place, the field grew from eight teams in the 2024 Eternal Return (이터널 리턴) National League to 16 in the 2026 season. The calendar was split across venues as well: KINTEX for the opening, Gwangju for the Mid-Season Cup, Asan for Super Week and Daejeon for the Championship.

Market data has moved in the same direction as the league. Korea's esports industry was worth 151.4 billion won (about $113 million) in 2022, up 44.5% from 104.8 billion won a year earlier, on the core measure used by the Korea Creative Content Agency (한국콘텐츠진흥원).

On the broader measure, which adds streaming advertising and data platforms, it rose 88.2% to 281.6 billion won. Most of that increase came from streaming: platform revenue rose 243.6% to 86.2 billion won, close to the 96.3 billion won that teams spent. Viewing, rather than arena attendance, carried the growth.

What Chungnam Content Agency has attached to this event is a set of spending paths beyond the ticket gate. Receipts from Asan merchants dated September 18 to 20 can be exchanged at the venue for merchandise on a sliding scale: 10,000 won (about $7.50) buys one photo card, 40,000 won buys two photo cards and two postcards.

Two free shuttle routes link the gymnasium to Onyang Oncheon and Cheonan-Asan stations, and 1,003 parking spaces are set aside. The design is to convert fan travel into weekend spending that stays in the city.

Lower bracket at 11 a.m. and final qualifier at 2 p.m. on the 19th, grand final at 2 p.m. on the 20th

Super Week closes out Circuit 3 of Eternal Return. The lower bracket starts at 11 a.m. on September 19, the final qualifier at 2 p.m. the same day, and the grand final at 2 p.m. on September 20. The lower bracket and final qualifier use a six-round points format and the grand final a sequential checkpoint format, both with a two-pick cap. Results from the Circuit 3 week-one matches — Group A, Group B and the upper bracket — determine where each team enters at Super Week.

All 16 teams appear on the Asan stage. The event doubles as a home fixture for Chungnam CNJ Esports (충남 CNJ E스포츠), the province's franchised team. The venue is dressed in CNJ's purple, and a large balloon figure of the team mascot 'Carry Owl' (캐리부엉이) stands at the entrance. The lobby holds a trophy display from CNJ Masters Season 8 and a fan photo wall. CNJ won the Eternal Return Masters Season 8 final on October 12, 2025, at Dream Arena in Daejeon, over a field of 12 teams.

Seating is split between the first-level floor and second-level general admission. Priority-pass and CNJ fan-seat winners enter the floor first, with the remainder filled by arrival order; the second level opens to all at 10 a.m. on both days. Asan Yi Sun-sin Gymnasium, home of the women's professional basketball club Asan Woori Bank Woori WON, seats about 3,000, and its 500 main-floor seats sold out before the opening.

kim jea kon(김제곤), head of the Future Industry Division at Chungnam Content Agency, told this publication that "Eternal Return has a powerful fandom in its twenties and thirties, strong enough that all 500 main-floor seats sold out," adding that this held "even though the venue in Asan is out of the way."

From 8 franchises to 16… an 800 million won league budget and a 100 million won prize pool

The 2026 KEL Eternal Return season opened on May 22 at KINTEX (킨텍스) in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province. It runs through Circuits 1–2, the Mid-Season Cup in Gwangju on August 1–2, Circuits 3–4, and the Championship in Daejeon on November 7–8. The total prize pool is 100 million won (about $75,000). First place receives the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism's award, second the Korea Creative Content Agency president's award, and third the KeSPA chairman's award.

The 16 teams are Yangju Whales, Incheon Wave, Seongnam ROX, Gwangju Slasher, Goyang Mir, FN Sejong, GC Busan Stella, Gyeongbuk Ascenders, Gyeongnam Sparkle Esports, Gyeonggi Innate, Daejeon Autoarmz, Daegu Guardians, Jeollanam-do Esports, Jeju Shadow, New Rise Gangwon and Chungnam CNJ Esports. Twelve of the 16 are based outside the Seoul metropolitan area.

Entry comes in two forms. Clubs that create a regional franchise receive partial funding for salaries and operating costs for up to four years, while partner teams receive single-year operating support. KEL runs three titles: PUBG Mobile (펍지모바일), FC Mobile (FC 모바일) and Eternal Return. PUBG Mobile and FC Mobile run from May to August; Eternal Return runs from May to October.

151.4 billion won domestic market… 96.3 billion in team budgets, 86.2 billion from streaming

The core domestic esports market reached 151.4 billion won in 2022, up 44.5% from 104.8 billion won (about $78 million) a year earlier. The broader measure, including streaming advertising and data platforms, rose 88.2% to 281.6 billion won from 149.6 billion won. The previous peak was 139.8 billion won (about $104 million) in 2019, followed by two years of decline before the 2022 recovery.

Team budgets rose 58.8% year on year to 96.3 billion won (about $72 million). Revenue at streaming platforms including AfreecaTV, YouTube and Twitch rose 243.6% to 86.2 billion won (about $64 million). The number of tournaments went from 131 in 2021 to 220 in 2022, and total prize money from 19 billion won to 21.6 billion won (about $16 million).

Investment in teams reached 111.55 billion won (about $83 million) in 2023, more than double the 52.86 billion won (about $39 million) of 2020. The Korea Creative Content Agency's 2024 esports survey recorded that "continuing deficits had not improved, not only at most teams but also at small and mid-sized teams" (cited via Daily Esports, January 22, 2026).

Global market from $8.1bn to $48bn… Korea's share slips from 3.7% to 1.1%

Global and Korean esports market forecasts, 2025 and 2034, in billions of dollars. Source: Deloitte Korea

Deloitte Korea (딜로이트 코리아) projects the global esports market at about $8.1 billion (about 10.86 trillion won) in 2025, rising to about $48 billion (about 64.37 trillion won) by 2034.

Over the same period it puts the Korean market at $300 million (about 402 billion won) growing to $520 million (about 697 billion won). Deloitte identifies the spread of streaming services as the principal growth driver.

Dividing one forecast by the other, Korea's share of the global market falls from 3.7% in 2025 to 1.1% in 2034. The domestic league is expanding into regional franchises while the larger increments of market growth are forecast overseas.

Four dedicated arenas at 37–41% utilisation… a fifth, costing 29.5 billion won, is going up in Asan

Korea has four dedicated esports arenas — in Busan, Daejeon, Gwangju and Gyeongnam. Utilisation rates in 2023 were 41.0% in Busan, 39.5% in Daejeon and 37.8% in Gwangju. League scheduling maps directly onto how often the buildings are used.

Super Week is not held in a dedicated esports arena but at Asan Yi Sun-sin Gymnasium (370-42 Nambu-ro, Asan). The 2026 KEL Eternal Return calendar is likewise spread across venues: KINTEX for the opening, Gwangju for the Mid-Season Cup, Asan for Super Week and Daejeon for the Championship.

Asan is getting a dedicated esports arena of its own. Chungcheongnam-do Province and Asan City broke ground on December 13, 2024, at Jangjae-ri in Baebang-eup, near KTX Cheonan-Asan Station. The project costs 29.51 billion won (about $22 million) and covers a 5,400㎡ site with 3,849㎡ of floor space across one basement and three above-ground levels. Seating totals about 500 — a 429-seat main arena and a 74-seat secondary arena — alongside a broadcast booth, player facilities and a lounge.

It is Korea's fifth dedicated esports arena and the first built new under public leadership. Chungcheongnam-do Province and the Chungnam Information Culture Industry Promotion Agency — now Chungnam Content Agency — will operate it, with plans covering self-run tournaments, bids for international events, an esports academy, and performances and exhibitions.

Governor Kim Tae-heum said at the groundbreaking that he expected Asan and Chungnam to emerge as an esports hub (Kyunghyang Shinmun, December 13, 2024).

Set against a Super Week held in a 3,000-seat multi-sport hall whose 500 main-floor seats sold out, the new arena's 500 seats will not absorb finals-scale demand. A split use — the dedicated arena for regular-season play and the academy, the multi-sport hall for large finals — is the likely pattern.

A 10,000-won Asan receipt buys one photo card… the exchange booth is tiered by spend

An Asan receipt exchange booth sits inside the first-level arena. Receipts from businesses in Asan dated September 18 to 20 can be traded for merchandise on a sliding scale: 10,000 won or more buys one photo card, 20,000 won two photo cards, 30,000 won two photo cards and a postcard, and 40,000 won two photo cards and two postcards. The threshold applies to a single receipt — totals from several receipts are not combined — and receipts are collected at the booth to prevent reuse.

The merchandise is a set of photo cards and postcards showing the characters Li Dailin, Bernice, Priya, Chloe and Nina at the Onyang hot springs. Because receipts cannot be pooled, the rule rewards larger single transactions rather than repeat small ones.

Chungnam Content Agency says it is linking lodging, dining, transport and tourism across the area around the gymnasium and Onyang Oncheon Station (온양온천역). The stated aim is to turn the weekend stay of players and visiting fans into merchant revenue.

Two free shuttle routes, 1,003 parking spaces… queuing opens at 9 a.m.

Free shuttles run from two stations. Onyang Oncheon Station to the gymnasium takes about 15 minutes; Cheonan-Asan Station about 30 minutes. The first departure is at 8:45 a.m. and the last at 9 p.m., at intervals of 30 minutes to an hour across both days. Parking totals 1,003 spaces — 703 at the multi-sport centre and 300 at the gymnasium's ice rink.

Queuing at the venue opens at 9 a.m., and anyone waiting earlier is not counted in the line. There are three entry items: a commemorative ticket for priority-pass and CNJ fan-seat winners, a commemorative keyring for those winners and the first 500 arrivals each day, and an entry coupon for every visitor. The keyring is handed over in exchange for the entry wristband, so collecting it forecloses re-entry to the first-level floor.

Doors are open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on both days. The poster issued on September 3 listed 8 p.m.; the guide Nimble Neuron published on September 11 lists 6 p.m.

All 16 teams run merchandise booths… 12 fan-made stalls on the second level

Inside the first-level arena, all 16 KEL teams run their own booths selling club merchandise. The team booths are open without queuing; the Chungnam CNJ Esports booth sits inside the CNJ Fan Zone. It puts every franchised club's retail channel in one room for the weekend.

The second level is the merchandise area, holding the official Eternal Return shop and 'Lumia Night Market' (루미아 야시장), a flea market of 12 stalls selling fan-made goods. Entry to that area runs through a kiosk queue that opens at 9 a.m., an hour before doors, near the gymnasium entrance.

Side programming is spread across the first-level corridor and the arena. Three mini-games themed on Eternal Return Season 12 'Sailing' hand out character pin buttons on completion. The CNJ Fan Zone runs a mascot vote, a photo booth and the Carry Owl balloon display. A VR and sim-racing zone, a SteelSeries aim contest zone, an indie game zone run by the Chungnam Global Game Center (충남글로벌게임센터) and food trucks also operate.

Cosplayers receive a commemorative badge modelled on the pendants of the new Season 12 characters Lucia and Ceres, one per person. Changing rooms — one each for men and women — are at the end of the first-level corridor. Singer Ryu Su-jeong (류수정) performs on September 19 and virtual idol group SKOSHISM (스코시즘) on September 20.

Sponsors are Chungcheongnam-do Province, Asan City, SK Telecom, Kkubraggo Charcoal Chicken, Micronics, Class101 and Pride Hospital. kim jea kon, head of the Future Industry Division at Chungnam Content Agency, said: "This Super Week is the first large-scale stage where CNJ, the team that represents Chungnam, meets its fans at home," adding that the agency is "preparing it as a festival that whole families can enjoy — not only those coming for the matches, but residents encountering esports for the first time" (Chungnam Content Agency press release, September 3, 2026).
