The iPhone Duo's 7.6-inch inner display runs at 1.42:1, leaving about 20% of the screen empty under a 16:9 video. Netflix rebuilt Billboard, Clips and the playback controls instead.

Apple unveiled its first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, at Apple Park in Cupertino on September 9. Pre-orders open October 16 and the device ships October 23. South Korea is in the first launch wave, where the 256GB model sells for KRW 3.29 million.
Netflix (넷플릭스) shipped a rebuilt iOS app for the device on the day of the announcement. What it changed was not the video player but Billboard, the large promotional card at the top of the interface; Clips, the vertical short-video feed; and the playback controls. The extra area a foldable opens up goes to catalogue rows and controls rather than to the video frame. Apple named only three outside developers in its announcement materials: Netflix, Zoom and Slack.
The Duo's inner display measures 7.6 inches at 1878×2670 pixels, an aspect ratio of 1.42:1. Held in landscape with a 16:9 video playing, the frame renders at 951×535 points and leaves 134 points empty above and below, about 20% of the screen. Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 (갤럭시 Z 폴드8) inner display runs at 1.33:1, which leaves 25%, and the Fold 8 Ultra at 1.11:1, which leaves 38%. Samsung moved the Fold 8 from 10:9 to 4:3 to make the unfolded device work more like a tablet, so both makers have shifted away from 16:9.
That screen format matters to streaming services because foldables are already taking tablet demand. IDC listed larger smartphones and foldables among the causes of a 12.3% year-on-year drop in worldwide tablet shipments in the second quarter of 2026, and Counterpoint Research forecasts cumulative foldable shipments passing 100 million units this year with Apple taking 25% in its first year. As the viewing the tablet used to carry moves to foldables, a streaming app has a third screen format to maintain after the vertical slab and the television.
Won figures convert at the September 10, 2026 base rate of KRW 1,339.9 to the dollar. Quotation marks mark reported speech; unquoted passages summarise reporting. Unused-area percentages by aspect ratio were calculated by this publication from published resolutions.
iPhone Duo starts at $1,999… Korea in the first launch wave at KRW 3.29 million
US pricing runs from $1,999 (about KRW 2.68 million) at 256GB to $3,199 (about KRW 4.29 million) at 2TB. The device reaches more than 70 countries on October 23, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, China, Japan, Germany, France and India, with another 28 countries following on October 30. Because Korea is in the first wave, Korean users receive the device the same day as American ones.
Korean prices run KRW 3.29 million for 256GB, KRW 3.59 million for 512GB, KRW 4.19 million for 1TB and KRW 5.09 million for 2TB, value-added tax included. It is the first iPhone to cross KRW 3 million in Korea, KRW 1.3 million above the iPhone 18 Pro at KRW 1.99 million announced the same day.

The body uses Grade 5 titanium with a hinge built from more than 100 components and carries an IP68 rating. Unfolded it is 5.2mm thick and weighs 254g, the heaviest iPhone made. It runs the A20 Pro, the same chip as the iPhone 18 Pro, uses Touch ID rather than Face ID, and is eSIM-only with no physical SIM tray. Apple Pencil support arrives later in 2026.

Apple cites up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display alone, 44 hours on the outer display alone and 24 hours with both used equally, with wired charging reaching 50% in about 20 minutes. Because playback runs more than 40% longer on the outer panel, viewing on the move has reason to concentrate on the 5.4-inch screen with the device closed.

Three things Netflix rebuilt… Billboard, Clips and the playback controls
Billboard is the large promotional card at the top of the mobile interface. In the iOS 27 build for the iPhone Duo, Netflix added dynamic visual effects that draw on the display, saying the card "brings entertainment to life in your hands."
Clips is the vertical feed of scenes from series and films, introduced on April 30, 2026, when Netflix overhauled its mobile app in nine markets including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and India. Elizabeth Stone, chief product and technology officer, said at the time that "mobile is an important part of how Netflix members stay connected to the entertainment they love." On the Duo the feed uses the wider screen and switches "seamlessly and frame-accurately between vertical and horizontal," and with the device closed the outer display carries preview clips from new titles.
The playback controls follow the state of the device. Their position changes across full screen, folded and propped-up modes; propped up, video plays on the upper half of the display and the controls drop below it. Netflix added a reflective glow to the controls that responds to ambient light and the angle of the device.

How the Netflix app is laid out by device state on iPhone Duo. Reconstructed from Apple and Netflix announcements
A Netflix spokesperson told Variety on September 9 that "when members use Netflix on iOS, they want that same immersive, big-screen feeling to travel with them." Leaving pixels and codecs alone and reworking only the interface around the video puts this release on the same line as the April mobile overhaul, whose target was discovery and time spent.
Inner display at 1.42:1… a 16:9 video leaves 20% of the screen empty
A ratio of 1.42:1 is close to the √2 proportion of A-series paper and nearly identical to the 1.43:1 IMAX ratio. It fits documents, feeds, mail and two-pane layouts, which is what Apple showed at the announcement — a message thread beside a mail message, and a magazine-style spread.
For video the same ratio works against the screen. By the calculation developer Blake Crosley published on September 10, a 16:9 frame renders at 951×535 points on the inner display in landscape and leaves 134 points of letterbox, about 20% of the screen area. Applying the same arithmetic to the Galaxy Z Fold 8's 4:3 panel (2448×1848) leaves 25% unused, and to the Fold 8 Ultra's 2504×2256 panel, 38%.

Screen left unused by a 16:9 video on an unfolded display, calculated from published resolutions. Sources: Apple, Samsung; publication calculation
The video itself does grow. Apple says the inner display is 50% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max screen and the 5.4-inch outer display covers 90% of the iPhone 18 Pro's screen area, with ProMotion, Always On and 3,000 nits peak brightness on both panels. Because the ratios do not match, part of that added area returns as letterbox rather than picture, and what fills it differs by app.
Samsung has handled this with Flex Mode, which puts video on the top half and controls on the bottom half when the device is partly folded, turning the surplus ratio into control surface. Netflix's propped-up layout on the iPhone Duo carries the same structure onto iOS.
Without the iOS 27 SDK an app keeps its old size… Disney+, HBO Max and YouTube have yet to update
iOS 27 rearranges the interface as the device folds and unfolds. Lock Screen controls, the Dock and navigation move from the bottom to the side, and the Dynamic Island runs vertically along the side of the outer display. Split View, which puts two apps side by side, arrives on iPhone for the first time.
How much of that screen an app uses depends on the SDK it was built against. An app not built against the iOS 27 SDK opens at its existing size and aspect ratio even on the unfolded screen, and building against the iOS 27 SDK extends it past the status bar area on the inner display. Filling the screen to the edge requires the iOS 27.1 SDK, which ships with the device on October 23.

The development calendar runs about six weeks. iOS 27 ships September 14, the Xcode 27.1 beta carrying iPhone Duo support arrives later in the month, developer forum Q&As open September 23, and the device ships October 23 on iOS 27.1. Neither the iOS 27 release candidate nor the Xcode 27 release candidate mentioned the iPhone Duo at announcement, which separated apps prepared in advance from the rest.
Netflix is the only streaming service that met the date. FlatpanelsHD reported on September 10 that Disney+, HBO Max and YouTube had not yet updated their apps. Netflix finished its build before the device was shown in public and timed it to the launch.
Cumulative foldable shipments pass 100 million… Apple forecast at 25% in year one
Counterpoint Research forecast in September that cumulative foldable shipments will exceed 100 million units by the end of 2026, eight years after the first commercial device in 2019. Its 2026 share forecast runs Samsung 38%, Apple 25% and Huawei 22%, with Apple shipping up to 6 million units in its first year given early production constraints, and the market growing 37% in 2027.

Foldables account for roughly 2% of the smartphone market and sell for about three times the price of a conventional handset. Tarun Pathak, research director at Counterpoint, said "Apple's entry will surely increase competition at the premium end" and that "there is room for the category to grow well beyond current volumes." Streaming services watch this band for its composition rather than its volume: 2% of devices sitting at three times the price, with Apple users entering at a forecast 25%, adds one more line to how ad tiers price by device.
Tablet shipments fall 12% in the second quarter… IDC names foldables among the causes
IDC counted 33.6 million tablets shipped worldwide in the second quarter of 2026, down 12.3% year on year and the steepest fall of the cycle. Consumer shipments dropped 13.5% and commercial 5.9%, with the United States down 31.6%, slates down 19.8% and detachables down 6.1%. Alongside memory prices and AI PCs absorbing productivity demand, IDC listed larger smartphones and foldables eroding casual content consumption among the causes. Jitesh Ubrani, IDC's director of consumer devices research, said "a device that's lost its reason to exist doesn't recover just because supply does."

Omdia counted 36 million units for the same quarter, down 10%. Apple led with 13.5 million units and a 38% share, down 8%, and Samsung followed with 6 million, down 13%. Himani Mukka, research manager at Omdia, said that under component constraints "manufacturers are unlikely to broadly prioritize their full tablet portfolios."
Because the tablet has carried streaming between the living-room television and the phone, that decline feeds straight into the mix of devices people watch on, and manufacturers are matching the aspect ratio to it. Samsung shifted the Fold 8's inner display from 10:9 to 4:3, a change Money Today reported on July 20 as designed for tablet-like use when unfolded. Apple's 1.42:1 and Samsung's 1.33:1 both sit away from 16:9, which is 1.78:1.
Netflix logs 97 billion view hours in the first half, up 2%… ad revenue doubles
Netflix recorded more than 97 billion view hours in the first half of 2026, up 2% year on year against 1.5% growth in 2025. Second-quarter revenue reached $12.56 billion, up 13%, with net profit of $3.4 billion. The company guided 2026 advertising revenue to $3 billion, roughly double the prior year, and said the ad-supported tier reaches more than 250 million monthly active viewers.

Greg Peters, co-chief executive, said on the July 16 earnings call that "all hours are not created equal" and that "all hours don't provide the same kind of value to the business." With total view hours growing around 2% a year, doubling advertising revenue requires both the rate per hour and the inventory carried inside that hour to move, and a larger screen carries more inventory in the same hour.
Device pricing sits on the other side of that calculation. Omdia puts the average selling price of book-type foldables 289% above a standard bar phone and clamshells 123% above. Foldables account for 1.0% to 1.5% of global smartphone volume but 5% of devices priced above $700, and more than 20% of Samsung's own $1,000-plus segment.
What rises on the cost side is development. Streaming apps have maintained two layouts, the vertical slab and the television, while a foldable asks for a separate arrangement in each of three states — folded, unfolded and propped up. Flex Mode gates that work on Android and the iOS 27.1 SDK on Apple's side, and because the aspect ratios and state definitions differ, the two have to be built separately.
1.44 million Korean pre-orders for the Fold 8… iPhone leads at 53% among Koreans in their twenties
Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 series shipped on August 7 after 1.44 million pre-orders in Korea, above the 1.38 million recorded by the Galaxy Note 10 in 2019. The Fold 8 accounted for 70% of those pre-orders and purchases by women in their teens to thirties more than doubled from the previous model. Counterpoint Research measured global sales over the first two weeks at 8% above the Z7 series, with the Fold 8 at 57% of series volume.

Sujeong Lim, associate director at Counterpoint, attributed the result to the "attractive screen ratio that converts to a tablet when unfolded." Analyst Liz Lee said Apple's entry could challenge the premium position Samsung has built over six generations.
A Gallup Korea survey of 1,675 people on July 13 put national handset share at 81% for Galaxy and 19% for iPhone. Among people in their twenties the iPhone led at 53% to 47%, rising to 67% among women in that group, while Galaxy held close to 100% among those aged 60 and over. That twenties cohort is where a KRW 3.29 million foldable iPhone lands first.
Netflix draws 527 minutes a month in Korea… YouTube draws 2,688
Mobile Index measured average monthly time per user in Korea for July 2026 at 2,688 minutes for YouTube, 649 for TikTok, 527 for Netflix, 479 for Wavve (웨이브), 410 for TVING (티빙), 156 for Disney+ and 73 for Coupang Play. The five streaming services combined reach 1,645 minutes, below YouTube alone, and TikTok passed Netflix in the same month.

The National Information Society Agency's 2025 survey on smartphone overdependence put short-form usage among Korean teenagers and adults at around 95%, and Ampere Analysis counts roughly 30% of global streaming users, and about 45% of Gen Z, as short-form viewers as well. Those figures sit behind Netflix putting Clips near the front of its foldable work.
Korean services already run vertical feeds; TVING opened a vertical short-form service inside its mobile app on December 5, 2024. Having a vertical feed and supporting a foldable are separate pieces of work, because the closed outer display, the unfolded inner display and the propped-up state each need their own layout.
What this means for Korean broadcasters and streaming services
October 23 is the same date in Korea. With Korea in the first launch wave, a 7.6-inch iOS screen reaches Korean users on the day it reaches American ones, and on that day the Netflix app runs to that screen's specification. Apple's developer documentation states that an app not built against the iOS 27.1 SDK opens at its existing size on the unfolded display, so when TVING, Wavve, Coupang Play and the broadcaster apps update will be visible on the same screen.
The unit of work is the device state rather than the app. The 5.4-inch outer display in the folded state matches the format of vertical short-form, which is where the feed TVING opened in December 2024 can be placed as it is. On the unfolded display, 20% remains above and below a 16:9 frame, making it a design decision whether that band carries a schedule, a channel list or an episode list. The propped-up state divides video and controls top and bottom, which suits live channel switching or catch-up browsing.
For services carrying live broadcast the letterbox is a different problem. Terrestrial and general programming channels produce in 16:9 and will continue to, so the 20% left on an unfolded display cannot be filled with picture and has to be filled with interface. What Wavve and the broadcaster apps place there determines time spent on the device.
For Korean services running ad tiers, one more device band appears. Omdia puts book-type foldable ASP 289% above a standard phone, and the category holds 5% of the market above $700. Since Netflix's plan to double ad revenue rests on the rate per hour and on inventory, Korean ad tiers face the question of whether to classify large-screen devices as separate inventory.
The tablet decline connects directly to the second-screen assumptions Korean services plan around. If the second-quarter tablet losses counted by IDC and Omdia keep moving to foldables in Korea as well, viewing scenarios built with a tablet sitting between the television and the phone need rebuilding. With 1.44 million Galaxy Z Fold 8 pre-orders and the iPhone Duo's first-wave launch falling within six months of each other, Korea becomes a market where both formats have to be maintained at once.
The sequence follows the formats. Android is gated by Flex Mode and iOS by the iOS 27.1 SDK, and the aspect ratios differ at 1.33:1 and 1.42:1. Defining three states on each format produces six layouts, so placing assets that already exist — the vertical feed on the outer display above all — is the route that pulls the response date forward.
