Fox buys Roku for $22 billion… streaming hits 48.6% in Nielsen's May Gauge, Tubi and Roku combine for 5.4%

Free ad-supported streaming has moved out of the shadow of paid subscription and become a standalone revenue business. Tubi, the free streaming service owned by Fox Corporation, said on Aug. 6 that it had reached 110 million monthly active users. The milestone comes a year after the service passed 100 million, and annual revenue has now cleared $1 billion. Users grew 14 percent year over year, viewing time rose 17 percent and quarterly revenue climbed 35 percent.

Two conditions underpin the growth. Cordless households — homes that never subscribed to pay TV or have already cut the cord — have accumulated, and advertising budgets have shifted from linear channels with shrinking reach to measurable connected-TV inventory. On the earnings call, Fox CEO Lachlan Murdoch said roughly 70 percent of Tubi's viewers are cordless, a share well above competing services.

13 billion hours in 12 months, 3.4 billion in Q4… 60% of users are Gen Z or Millennial

Tubi logged 13 billion hours of viewing over the past 12 months, including a record 3.4 billion hours in the fourth quarter. Its library consists of more than 375,000 movies and TV episodes, over 400 Tubi Originals and 25,000 creator episodes.

About 60 percent of the audience is Gen Z or Millennial, and those viewers spend more time on Tubi than on traditional broadcast or cable. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Tubi CEO Anjali Sud pointed to audience and viewing time rising in tandem as the key result — evidence, she said, that the service is retaining viewers rather than merely acquiring them.
